Visitor Center Volunteer

Join our team as a Visitor Center Volunteer and help provide an exceptional experience for visitors exploring Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. This position is designed for volunteers who live on‑site in their RV and contribute their time in exchange for an RV campsite with hookups.

Work campers serve as friendly, knowledgeable ambassadors for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, helping guests connect with local wildlife, recreational opportunities, and conservation programs.

Duties:

• Staff the visitor center front desk

• Greet and orient visitors, answer questions, and provide maps and brochures

• Assist with daily opening/closing procedures

• Provide basic interpretation on wildlife, trails, and local regulations

• Support education or outreach programs as needed

• Help maintain a clean and welcoming visitor center environment

• Light facility tasks such as sweeping, refilling brochure racks, or watering native plants

Work Schedule:

A minimum of 20 hours a week. Scheduling is flexible and can be coordinated with staff to accommodate days off and travel needs.

Campsite Amenities:

• Free RV campsite with full or partial hookups (electric, water, sewer, laundry)

Qualifications:

• Friendly, reliable, and comfortable interacting with the public

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Enthusiasm for nature, wildlife, and conservation

• Ability to sit/stand for periods of time in a visitor center setting

• Background check required

About the area:

Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge is located at the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula and is a vital stopping point for millions of birds and butterflies during the fall migration. This area is surrounded by water with the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Chesapeake Bay to the west. This place includes a mixture of salt marsh and upland habitats with plenty of hiking, fishing, and other recreational opportunities scattered across the Shore.
